Why doesn’t Cecily want to study German?

If you are referring to Oscar Wilde's play "The Importance of Being Earnest," Cecily doesn't want to study German because she is afraid that it will make her less pretty. 
She wants to study French, which is a beautiful and romantic language, which suits a young, pretty lady like she is.
