Pangaea split into two new continents, Laurasia and Gondwanaland
The modern continents of North America (Greenland), Europe, and Asia made up by Laurasia.
The modern continents of Antarctica, Australia, and South America made formed Gondwanaland.
What two facts support the existence of Pangea?
After it was discovered that the rock formations of western Europe, northern Africa, and eastern North America all shared a similar ancestor and that they coevolved with the existence of Gondwanaland.
Together, these findings provided evidence for Pangea's existence.
What caused Pangea to split into the current plates?
Similar to how it was formed, Pangea started to fragment around 200 million years ago due to tectonic plate movement brought on by mantle convection.
The supercontinent split as a result of new material moving away from rift zones, just as new material helped construct Pangea.
