What issues made the Iran-Contra affair such a big deal in the late 1980's?

I think it was Ronald Reagan's involvement in Funding the Rebellion Group.
President Ronald Reagan gave various aids to Contra because Contra had a liberty principle that was appealing to the United States and they fought in oroder to eliminate communist influence in that country.
